Can You Use Two Signal Accounts on One Computer with Signal Desktop?
Can you use two Signal accounts on one computer?
Not inside Signal Desktop, as far as Signal's own pages describe. According to Signal's Help Center (read 3 October 2026), Signal Desktop only works once it is linked to Signal on an Android phone or iPhone, and a new account cannot be registered on Desktop itself. None of the pages read for this guide describes a second account, or an account switcher, inside one Signal Desktop.
What the pages do describe is the reverse: one account running on several devices. That model explains most of the confusion, and it shows which arrangements for two accounts stay within Signal's rules. Signal's download page offers Desktop as a downloaded app for Mac, Windows and Linux, so a browser profile has no Signal sign-in to hold; the profiles guide covers that.
How does Signal Desktop attach to an account?
Signal Desktop has no account of its own. According to the Linked Devices page (updated 22 September 2026), linking is offered in the registration flow that appears when the app is first installed or reinstalled, and it ties the Desktop to your primary device, the phone where the account lives. The page's steps:
- Install Signal Desktop and open it; it shows a QR code.
- On the phone, open Signal and go to Signal Settings > Linked devices > Link a new device.
- Unlock with your biometrics or the code that opens the phone. The page stresses that this is not your Signal PIN. The in-app camera then opens.
- Scan the QR code with the phone.
- Pick Transfer Message History or Don't Transfer.
- Send a message from the linked device.
Choosing to transfer lets chats and the last 45 days of media sync from the phone. The account whose phone scanned the code is the account that Desktop belongs to.
Which limits does Signal publish?
| Limit | What the Help Center says | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Numbers per phone | One mobile device carries one registered number; a dual SIM phone has to pick one of its two | Dual Sim |
| Mobile devices per account | The account sits on one mobile device at a time; registering on a second phone takes over and the first goes offline | Troubleshooting multiple devices |
| Linked devices | Five secondary devices at most: iPads, computers, Android phones and tablets | Troubleshooting multiple devices, Linked Devices |
| Desktop on its own | Desktop is usable only once linked to Signal on Android or iPhone; it cannot register an account | Installing Signal, Troubleshooting Installs or Updates |
| Keeping links alive | The phone must get online at least every 30 days, and a linked device idle for 45 days is unlinked too | Linked Devices |
| Work use | Every phone needs its own number; one number cannot be split across phones | Can I use Signal for work? |
The Help Center also describes Signal Login, an optional route, added in the latest Android update, for creating an account without a phone number (page updated 17 September 2026). It says linked devices on such an account behave like those on a number-based account. It does not say whether Signal Login alters the one-number-per-phone rule above, so treat that rule as the one on record.
Which arrangements for two accounts match what Signal documents?
| You want | What the Help Center documents |
|---|---|
| One account on your phone and your computer | Link Desktop as a secondary device; five per account is the cap |
| A personal account and a work account | Two numbers on two phones, since every phone needs its own number; Desktop belongs to the account of the phone that scanned its code |
| Your number kept private when you share contact details | A username to share instead of, or next to, your number, plus the Settings > Privacy > Phone Number controls; one username at a time |
| Work chats and friend chats kept apart inside one account | Chat folders, described for Signal on Android, for example a work folder |
| A team sharing one conversation | One account per person; the shared space is a group, covered in Signal for work and teams |
Two details keep this honest. Chat folders are documented for Android only. And a username is only a way to start a chat without sharing your number; it is not a second account.
What if Desktop will not link, or shows the wrong account?
- A network message. For Signal cannot link this device using your current network, the Help Center asks whether the computer is on a corporate network or used for work, and suggests logging out of that network, checking security or antivirus software, and checking VPN, firewall and proxy settings.
- The QR code does not load. Reconnect to Wi-Fi and relaunch Signal Desktop, then confirm you run the latest version and have not reached five linked devices.
- Desktop is linked to the wrong account. Unlink it on the phone (Signal Settings, Linked devices) or on the computer with Settings > General > Delete Data; the page notes you stay registered on your phone. Because linking happens in the flow shown at first install or reinstall, linking it to another phone means going through that flow again.
- Desktop unlinks by itself. See why Signal Desktop keeps logging out or unlinking for the timers and banners.
Where ADSSPEED fits
Signal Desktop is an installed app linked to a phone, so browser profiles are not what separates Signal accounts. ADSSPEED is a desktop app for Windows and macOS that manages many browser profiles and also offers Android phone profiles, each with its own device configuration, so mobile apps can be used from a PC. Profile data stays on your own computer. Each Signal account still needs its own number or Signal Login that you control, and Signal's registration rules do not change. Use ADSSPEED only for accounts you own or are authorised to manage, and follow Signal's rules. ADSSPEED is not affiliated with Signal.
Frequently asked questions
Can you have two Signal accounts?
Signal's Help Center ties an account to a number on one mobile device, and its work page says every phone needs a number of its own. Two accounts therefore mean two numbers on two phones. Signal's Terms add that once Signal disables an account for a violation, you may not open a new one without its permission.
Does Signal Desktop work with two accounts?
The Help Center pages read present Signal Desktop as a device linked to an account on an Android phone or iPhone, and say an account cannot be registered on Desktop itself. They give no steps for a second account or an account switcher in Desktop, so this guide does not claim that one exists.
Can you use Signal on multiple devices?
Yes, through linked devices. An account lives on one mobile device at a time, and up to five secondary devices, such as iPads, computers and Android phones or tablets, can be attached to it. The phone has to connect at least every 30 days, or the linked devices are cut off.
Can you have multiple Signal accounts on one phone?
The Dual Sim page answers no: one mobile device can carry only one registered number, and a dual SIM phone has to pick one. A newer page describes Signal Login, an optional Android account without a number, but it does not say that this changes the rule.
How do I switch accounts on Signal?
The Help Center pages read describe no switch-account menu. Linking happens in the registration flow shown at first install or reinstall, so moving a Desktop to another account means unlinking it and linking again with the other account's phone.
Can you have multiple Signal accounts on an iPhone?
The Dual Sim page answers for phones in general and has sections for Android and iOS: one mobile device carries one registered number. Two accounts therefore need two numbers on two devices. Signal's Terms still apply to each account, whichever phone or computer it is used from.
