Do Browser Profiles Work for Signal? Keeping Two Accounts Apart on One PC
Do browser profiles work for Signal?
Not for Signal Desktop. Signal's download page (read 3 October 2026) lists apps for Android, iPhone and iPad, Mac, Windows and Linux, and mentions no browser version. It also says the desktop app needs Signal installed on your phone first. If you searched for signal desktop web, that is the answer: there is no website sign-in for a Chrome, Edge or Firefox profile to hold.
That does not make profiles useless in general. They are the right tool for web accounts, and the browser profile guide explains why. For Signal, the separation has to come from Signal's own structure, covered below.
What does a browser profile keep apart, and why does that stop short of Signal?
| Tool | What it keeps apart | What it does not reach |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome profile | Bookmarks, history, passwords and other settings; Chrome Help suggests profiles for sharing a computer or separating work and personal accounts. Each profile is a subfolder of the user data directory, which holds history, bookmarks and cookies | Anything that is not a website in that browser |
| Firefox container | Cookies, local storage, IndexedDB and caches inside one window | History and bookmarks are not separated yet; saved passwords are not separated by design |
| Signal Desktop | Not a browser feature: it is a downloaded app that is linked to one account's phone | Browser profile settings do not apply to it |
What keeps two Signal accounts apart on a PC instead?
| Layer | What is per account | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | A phone number, or Signal Login on Android | Terms, Phone Numberless Registration |
| Primary device | One phone; Signal is registered on one mobile device at a time | Troubleshooting multiple devices |
| Desktop link | Made by scanning a QR code with that account's phone; up to five linked devices | Linked Devices |
| PIN | A PIN helps recover the account's profile and settings; Signal cannot reset or recover it | Signal PIN |
| Signal profile | An encrypted name and picture; a first name is required, and a nickname, single character or emoji is accepted | Signal Profiles and Message Requests |
| Data on the computer | Messages and files are stored locally; on Windows the Signal data folder sits under your user's AppData | Backup and Restore Messages |
One more fact matters here. The Help Center explains that Signal's protocol keeps state, which is why Desktop files cannot just be copied into another Signal instance, or copied again after you have linked and used the app; moving folders by hand can cause errors. It documents no way to run two Signal Desktop apps for two accounts side by side, so this guide does not describe one.
How do you hand over, back up and clean up a Signal Desktop?
Hand over or retire a computer
- On your phone, open Signal Settings and go to Linked devices; on iPhone it is profile, Settings, Linked devices. Select the computer and unlink it.
- Or, on the computer, open Settings > General > Delete Data (Mac: Signal > Settings; Windows and Linux: File > Settings). The page says you stay registered on your phone. Another Help Center page words this as Preferences > Privacy > Delete application data and notes that it deletes the data on that computer, not your account. Either way the Desktop's message history is removed, and because Desktop history cannot be moved to another device, decide first whether you need it.
- To remove the app, uninstall it. On Windows, run Uninstall Signal.exe in
C:\Users\<YourName>\AppData\Local\Programs\signal-desktop. To remove local data as well, the Backup and Restore Messages page listsC:\Users\<YourName>\AppData\Roaming\Signal; the Mac path is~/Library/Application Support/Signaland the Linux path is~/.config/Signal. The page tells you to replace<YourName>with your Windows user, so on a shared PC check that you are in the right user's folders before deleting anything.
Back up
- Message history does not move between Desktops. According to the Help Center, Signal Desktop cannot move message history to or from any other device, and macOS Migration Assistant and Time Machine are not supported either.
- Desktop backups go to your Android phone. In Desktop open Settings > Backups, select Set up under Other ways to back up, choose a folder you will not rename, and store the 64-character recovery key safely. Restoring is done on the primary Android device, and restoring on iOS is not supported yet.
- Restoring removes the link. The page says a restore on the phone removes the existing link to Desktop; click the yellow banner in Desktop to relink.
What if something fails?
- Errors after moving computers. For Chat session refreshed or out-of-sync messages, the Help Center lists: quit Desktop on the old computer, unlink it from the phone, start Desktop on the new one, link it from the phone, then uninstall and delete the old data.
- The new Desktop will not link. Confirm the latest version and fewer than five linked devices. If the network blocks it, check security software, VPN, firewall and proxy settings. More in why Signal Desktop keeps unlinking.
- You wanted a second account on the same PC. The documented route is a second number on its own phone; see two Signal accounts on one computer.
Where ADSSPEED fits
If you came for browser profiles: Signal Desktop is not a website, so a browser profile, in Chrome or in ADSSPEED, does not hold a Signal sign-in. ADSSPEED's browser profiles each keep their own cookies, local data and browser settings, which suits web accounts. For mobile apps it offers Android phone profiles, each with its own device configuration, on Windows and macOS, with data kept on your own computer. Signal's registration rules still apply to every account. Use only accounts you own or are authorised to manage. ADSSPEED is not affiliated with Signal.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Signal desktop web version?
Signal's download page, read on 3 October 2026, lists apps for Android, iPhone and iPad, Mac, Windows and Linux, and mentions no browser version. It adds that the desktop app needs Signal installed on your phone first. A browser profile therefore has no Signal login to keep apart.
Can Signal have multiple profiles?
A Signal profile is the encrypted name and picture you set in the app, shown with your number. The Help Center presents it as part of your account and describes no switch-profile feature. A first name is required, and a nickname, single character or emoji is accepted. Separate accounts need separate numbers.
How do I back up Signal Desktop?
Open Signal Desktop, go to Settings, then Backups, and under Other ways to back up select Set up. Signal creates a 64-character recovery key and you choose a folder. The Help Center says such a backup can be restored to your primary Android device; restoring on iOS is not supported yet.
Can I restore a Signal Desktop backup or move chats to a new computer?
Signal's Help Center says Desktop cannot move message history to or from other devices, and that copying files into another instance is not supported. Desktop backups restore to the primary Android phone, after which linked devices must be relinked.
How do I sign out of Signal Desktop on a shared computer?
Unlink it from the phone's Linked devices list, or use Settings, General, Delete Data on the Desktop; you stay registered on your phone. To remove the app and its local data, uninstall it and delete the Signal folder for your user, using the paths on Signal's Backup and Restore Messages page.
