Why Does Goodreads Keep Logging Me Out, or Say I Can't Sign In?

Why does Goodreads keep logging me out?

The sign-in Goodreads gives you is recognised through cookies, so a browser that loses or blocks them looks signed out. Goodreads' Cookies Notice (last updated 30 October 2024, read 3 October 2026) says cookies are how Goodreads recognises you once you have signed in, and that you cannot use services requiring a sign-in if your browser blocks or refuses its cookies. The notice adds that you manage cookies through your browser settings. A cookie block, a clean-up that deletes the site's cookies, or opening Goodreads in another browser profile all leave a browser without that cookie.

The pages read for this guide do not publish a list of reasons for extra checks, such as signing in from a new device or place, so this guide does not guess at them. If a screen asks you to complete a step, complete it on that screen. The sections below cover what Goodreads does document.

What do Goodreads' own pages say about staying signed in?

PageWhat it saysWhat to do with it
Cookies NoticeCookies are how you are recognised after sign-in; blocking or refusing them stops services that need a sign-in; cookies are managed in browser settingsAllow cookies for Goodreads in the profile you use, and do not run clean-ups that wipe them

What should you check first?

  1. Look at which browser profile you are in. In Chrome, select Profile at the top right to see your profiles and switch between them. A sign-in made in another profile is not visible in this one.
  2. Check that cookies for Goodreads are allowed in that profile. A block, or a tool that clears cookies, removes the sign-in the site relies on.
  3. Work out which route the account uses, whether Amazon, Apple, Google or email, and use that same route every time.
  4. If you use the email route and the password fails, open Password assistance and enter the email address associated with the account.
  5. If a passkey message appears, follow it. One message suggests signing in another way or following your device's instructions. The other says the passkey is not working, possibly because of a server problem, and suggests your password or trying again later.
  6. Still stuck? Use the Get help with signing in link, or the Contact us form under My account.

Why does it happen more when two accounts share one browser profile?

Goodreads recognises you through cookies, and Chromium's documentation lists cookies among the data in a profile's folder. One profile therefore holds one set of Goodreads cookies. If you sign in as a second account in that profile, expect the new sign-in to take the place of the old one, so the first account looks "logged out" when you go back to it. Goodreads does not document this behaviour on the pages read, so treat it as the likely explanation, not a stated rule.

Two more situations produce the same symptom:

  • A different profile or browser. You signed in somewhere else, and this window has never seen that sign-in.
  • Another person on the same browser. The Terms of Use make you responsible for everything done under your account and password, and ask you to report unauthorised use to Goodreads without delay. If someone else has used your login, do not just sign back in. Start Password assistance and contact Goodreads.

The steady fix for two accounts is one browser profile per account, which the profiles guide walks through. What a browser profile is explains the idea.

Which sign-in messages have an official next step?

What you seeWhat the Goodreads page saysWhat to do
Please Enable Cookies to ContinueThe sign-in, sign-up and password assistance pages carry this message, and the Cookies Notice says blocked cookies stop sign-in servicesAllow cookies for Goodreads in this profile, reload and try again
A passkey error on the email sign-in pageOne message points you to another sign-in method or your device's instructions; the other points you to your password or a later retryUse your email and password, or retry the passkey later
A wrong or invalid email message on Password assistanceThe page asks you to correct the address and try againType the address associated with the account, and try any other address you may have used

Activity you did not doThe Terms of Use ask you to report unauthorised use to Goodreads without delayStart Password assistance, then contact Goodreads

What if it still fails?

  • You cannot sign in at all. The Contact us page asks you to sign in for the most relevant help, so from a signed-out state begin with the Get help with signing in link on the sign-in page, which leads to Goodreads' Help Center.
  • Goodreads has ended or limited your access. The Terms of Use say Goodreads may suspend, end or refuse access without notice. The pages read describe no appeal process, so the Contact us form is the official way to ask about your account.
  • The same problem comes back every few days. Check whether a clean-up tool, a browser setting or a second profile is removing the cookies, and read the multi-login guide for options with two accounts.

Where ADSSPEED fits

ADSSPEED is a desktop app for Windows and macOS for managing many browser profiles. Each profile holds its own cookies, local data and browser settings, so signing in to one Goodreads account does not overwrite the sign-in of another, which removes one cause of the sign-outs above. It cannot stop Goodreads from asking you to sign in again, and recovery still goes through Goodreads' own pages. You can open, stop and organise profiles in bulk, and the profile data stays on your own computer. First steps are in installing ADSSPEED on Windows. ADSSPEED is not affiliated with Goodreads.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Goodreads keep logging me out?

Goodreads' Cookies Notice says cookies are how it recognises you after you sign in, and that blocking or refusing them stops sign-in services from working. A cookie block, a clean-up that deletes the site's cookies, or a different browser profile can all leave your browser without that cookie. The pages read give no other documented reasons.

Why can't I sign in to Goodreads with Facebook?

The sign-in page read on 3 October 2026 offers Amazon, Apple, Google and email, and the sign-up page offers Amazon, Apple and email. Neither shows a Facebook button. The pages do not explain what happens to older Facebook sign-ins, so try Password assistance or ask Goodreads through the Contact us form.

What should I do if I can't sign in to Goodreads with Amazon?

The pages read do not explain Amazon-specific failures. Start from the Get help with signing in link on the sign-in page, which leads to Goodreads' Help Center, and if that does not solve it use the Contact us form under the My account topic.

How do I reset my Goodreads password?

Open Password assistance from the email sign-in page. According to the page read on 3 October 2026, you enter the email address associated with your Goodreads account and click Continue. If that address is not accepted, check it for typing mistakes and try any other address you may have used.

Why does the Goodreads app keep signing me out?

The pages read for this guide cover the Goodreads website, not the iOS or Android apps, so they do not explain app sign-outs. For the website, check cookie settings and the browser profile first. For the app, use Goodreads' Help Center and Contact us form.

What does Keep me signed in do on Goodreads?

The email sign-in page has a Keep me signed in checkbox with a Details link beside it, which is where Goodreads gives its own explanation, so read that before relying on the option. As a general habit, tick it only on a computer you control, not on a shared one.
