X (Twitter)
How Many X (Twitter) Accounts Can You Have? X's Rules on Multiple Accounts
How many X accounts can you have under X's rules?
Up to ten, as long as each has its own purpose. X's Authenticity policy (checked 3 October 2026) says you may create or operate up to ten accounts for different, non-duplicative purposes. The number matters less than the pattern: the same policy treats accounts that work together to lift each other's content as a violation.
The rest of this guide sets out the allowed and prohibited patterns, what X says can happen, and why a new account never answers a suspension. Use only accounts you own or are authorised to manage, and follow X's rules. X updates these pages, so check them before you rely on a detail.
What the Authenticity policy allows and what it does not
| Allowed: accounts with distinct purposes | Not allowed: accounts that work as a group |
|---|---|
| Running accounts that each have their own identity, purpose or use | Running accounts that interact with the same or very similar content, or that push up the visibility of content or accounts |
| Brand accounts for different languages or places | Setting up accounts to push a trending topic or hashtag |
| Accounts for personal projects or hobbies | Having your accounts act on the same posts, profiles or polls |
| Accounts for an organisation with several chapters or branches | Abusing mentions or replies, or using engagement features to lift one of your own accounts |
| Publishing the same or near-identical content from several accounts, including into the same trending topic or hashtag |
The allowed examples come from the policy's own list, and the page gives others. The test is whether each account does a genuinely different job.
What can happen when the rules are broken
| What X may do | What X's pages say |
|---|---|
| Ask you to choose | For a violation centred on multiple accounts, you may be asked to keep one account, with the others suspended |
| Limit the account | X may place an account in a read-only state for a time, limiting posting, reposting and liking while you can still read |
| Lock the account | X says a locked or limited account may be compromised or in breach of the X Rules or Terms of Service |
| Suspend permanently | The most severe action: the account is removed from view and the violator is prevented from creating new accounts. X says severe violations can be suspended at first detection |
| Let you appeal | If you think X made a mistake, you can appeal through the platform interface or by filing a report; if X upholds the suspension it replies with the policy that was violated |
Why a new account is not the answer to a suspension
X's ban evasion policy, part of the Authenticity page, says you may not attempt to evade an enforcement action, for example by creating new accounts, imitating a suspended account to replace it, or repurposing an existing account. It treats having someone else run an account to evade an action in the same way, and it does the same for working around technical limits on account creation, such as account phone number limits. X says that if it suspends an account for violating the X Rules, it may also suspend any other account it believes the same holder or entity operates in violation of the earlier suspension, whenever that other account was created.
Those lines concern evasion. They do not forbid sharing access to a legitimate account through X's own features, which managing X accounts as a team describes. If you were suspended, the route X documents is an appeal, never a replacement.
Automation, identities and passwords
| Topic | What X's pages say | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Duplicate content | The X Developer Policy rules out publishing the same or near-identical content across multiple accounts | Anyone building on the X API |
| Bots | An API-based bot account has to say plainly what it is and who is responsible for it; services that post, follow or send Direct Messages must follow X's Automation Rules | API-based services |
| Bulk actions | The Developer Policy rules out bulk, aggressive or spammy actions, bulk following included | API-based services |
| Passwords | Developers may not store X passwords or ask people to hand them over directly | Apps and tools that connect to X |
| Parody, commentary and fan accounts | X says they must make clear in their name and bio that they are not the subject | Accounts depicting someone else |
| Real names | X says you need not show your real name or image, but your profile should not claim to be a person or organisation you are not connected to | All accounts |
The Developer Policy speaks to developers, and X's Automation Rules are a separate Help Center page. The practical lesson for account managers is to hand access to people through X's sharing features, not through passwords.
Staying inside the rules: a short checklist
- Give every account its own clear purpose and its own audience.
- Do not let your accounts like, repost or reply to one another to lift attention.
- Do not post the same content from several accounts.
- Keep profile information honest about who runs the account and what it is.
- Share access with Delegate or Teams rather than a password.
- If one account is suspended, appeal. Do not replace it.
A browser profile or any other tool does not change any of these rules. What a browser profile is explains what such tools do and do not separate.
What if an account is limited, locked or suspended?
- Read the notice on the account and any email from X. They name the reason.
- If you see a verify-your-account screen, complete it; the sign-in checks guide lists the methods.
- If you think X made a mistake, appeal through the platform interface or by filing a report, as X's enforcement and suspension pages describe.
- Wait for X's reply. Do not open another account meanwhile: that is the evasion X prohibits.
Where ADSSPEED fits
ADSSPEED is a desktop app for Windows and macOS that manages many browser profiles. It helps you keep the X accounts you are entitled to run organised, each in its own profile with its own cookies, local data and browser settings, and it lets you open and stop profiles in bulk. It does not change what X's rules allow, and nothing in it is a way around an enforcement action. Use it only with accounts you own or are authorised to manage, and follow X's rules. ADSSPEED is not affiliated with X (Twitter).
Frequently asked questions
Can you have 2 Twitter accounts, and how many are allowed?
Yes. X's Authenticity policy (checked 3 October 2026) says you may create or operate up to ten accounts for different, non-duplicative purposes. A personal account and a separate work account fit that idea; two accounts that post the same things or promote each other do not.
What is Twitter ban evasion?
X's ban evasion policy, part of Authenticity, says you may not attempt to evade an enforcement action such as a suspension, for example by creating new accounts, imitating a suspended account to replace it or repurposing an existing account. X also says it may suspend other accounts it believes the same holder runs in violation of the earlier suspension.
Can I make a new account after being suspended for ban evasion on Twitter?
X says a permanent suspension removes the account from view and prevents the violator from creating new accounts, and it treats replacing a suspended account as a further violation. If you think X made a mistake, its Help Center says to appeal through the platform interface or by filing a report.
Why is my Twitter account locked for violating the rules?
X's Help page on locked or limited accounts says such an account may be compromised or in violation of the X Rules or Terms of Service. Read the notice on the account, follow the unlock steps it shows, and appeal if you believe X made an error.
Why is my Twitter account limited?
X describes limits at several levels. Its enforcement page says X may place an account in a read-only state for a time, limiting posting, reposting and liking while you can still read. Its locked-or-limited page says such an account may be compromised or in violation of the rules. The pages used here give no standard duration, so read the notice and appeal if you think it is a mistake.
