Why Does Tumblr Keep Logging Me Out? Cookies, Rate Limits and New-Location Emails
Why does Tumblr keep logging you out or emailing you about a sign-in?
According to Tumblr's Help Center (read 3 October 2026), the documented causes are ordinary ones. Browser cookies may be blocked or cleared, an extension may interfere, or a VPN that shares one IP address across many users may trigger a Rate limit exceeded error. The emails have their own trigger: a sign-in from a new or unfamiliar location. Tumblr describes them as security notices.
If you run several accounts in one browser, there is a further cause that is easy to miss: logging out of one account to use the next. It feels the same as being signed out against your will.
Which symptom do you have?
| Symptom | What Tumblr's Help Center says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You are signed out or cannot stay signed in | Tumblr requires browser cookies; check they are enabled; clear Tumblr.com-specific cookies if old login details linger; third-party cookie blocking may interfere | Enable cookies for tumblr.com, clear only its cookies, try again |
| 'Rate limit exceeded' | You tried to access the site too many times in rapid succession; a VPN's shared IP address can cause it | Wait and try later; turn the VPN off |
| An email about a new location or a new app | Account activity emails cover a new or unfamiliar location, authorising a new app and turning off two-factor authentication | Review Active Sessions, then see below |
| A code is requested | Two-factor authentication asks for an authenticator-app code on top of your password | Use the app, or a backup code |
| The reset email does not arrive | It may take up to 10 minutes; the address must be verified | Check Email troubleshooting, then the Account Recovery form |
| 'You have deleted your account' | The account is being deleted; data is kept for 30 days | Follow the restore steps in Delete Your Account or Blog |
| Google sign-in creates a new account | You may have connected a Google or Apple account earlier | Use Continue with Google (or Apple) |
What can you check in the browser first?
The Common Browser Issues page gives a checklist for sign-in trouble:
- Confirm cookies are enabled. The page says Tumblr needs them and names staying signed in as an example.
- If the browser keeps showing old login details, clear Tumblr.com-specific cookies rather than everything.
- Update the browser and its extensions.
- Disable all extensions, including ad-blockers, anti-tracking extensions and XKit, and add them back one at a time.
- Make sure tumblr.com and its subdomains are not blocked.
- Try another browser, or another device in the same place.
- Restart the computer and the router.
Accounts opened in the same browser profile share one set of cookies, so a separate profile per account removes the log-out-to-switch loop. The profile guide for Tumblr has the steps.
How do Account activity emails and Active Sessions work?
The Help Center says Tumblr emails you automatically when something happens that might mean someone else has used your account. The triggers it lists are logging in from a new or unfamiliar location, authorising a new app (typically the first login on the Android or iOS app) and disabling two-factor authentication. These emails cannot be turned off.
The page also says you will not get a login notification from a location you have used within the past two months. A note on Tumblr's Changes blog dated 5 August 2026 words it differently: no notice for logins from recent known IPs, but notices for new IPs. So an account that is always opened from a place it has used recently triggers fewer of these emails. That is a convenience, not a promise about anything else, and the emails are only notices; see the guide on keeping time zone, language and IP consistent.
To review sessions on the web:
- Open your account settings from Settings in the left menu.
- Scroll to Active Sessions. It lists browsers and locations that accessed your account over the past 30 days.
- Click the X next to any session you do not recognise to end it.
- If you do not recognise one, change your password and turn on two-factor authentication.
The list shows browser activity, including mobile browsers, but not use of the app; authorised apps are managed on the apps settings page.
What if a code, a reset email or recovery does not work?
- Two-factor codes. Tumblr's codes come from an authenticator app. A backup code can replace a code, each backup code works once, and a set of ten is generated from the Security section on the web. When two-factor is on, a password reset also needs the authenticator code, which is not sent by email.
- No codes at all. Contact support using the 'Account access' category.
- Reset email missing. Wait up to 10 minutes, confirm the address is verified, read Email troubleshooting, then fill in the Account Recovery form.
- Hacked account. Change the password, turn on two-factor authentication, revoke apps under Settings and Apps, and contact support with 'Account access' and 'My account was hacked'.
- No access to the account's email. The recovery page says Tumblr cannot help you recover the account; email providers have their own recovery options.
What if Tumblr suspended or terminated the account?
Tumblr's User Guidelines say you may receive a notice by email, and that repeat violations may lead to permanent suspension of a blog or account. The Terms say Tumblr may terminate or suspend access without prior notice, and that your right to use the Service ends immediately when it does.
The route Tumblr gives for a mistake is an appeal through its Support form, up to six months after the decision, reviewed by humans. Tumblr asks you not to reply to the original notification, because replies sent that way will not reach it. A new account is not a substitute: if a decision is wrong, appeal it. Keep the account's email address current so that the notice reaches you.
Where ADSSPEED fits
ADSSPEED is a desktop app for Windows and macOS that manages many browser profiles. Each profile keeps its own cookies, local data and browser settings, so Tumblr accounts you manage can stay signed in side by side without logging each other out. Profiles can be opened, stopped and organised in bulk, a proxy can be set per profile, and profile data stays on your own computer. ADSSPEED does not change what Tumblr allows. ADSSPEED is not affiliated with Tumblr.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Tumblr keep logging me out?
Tumblr's Help Center says it requires browser cookies, so blocked or cleared cookies are the first thing to check, then extensions such as ad-blockers, anti-tracking tools and XKit. If you run several accounts in one browser, logging out of one to open the next produces the same effect.
How do I log out of Tumblr on all devices?
Tumblr's Account Activity page describes ending sessions one at a time. On the web, open Active Sessions on your account settings page, which lists browsers and locations from the past 30 days, and click the X next to a session to end it. The list covers browsers, not the apps.
What does 'Rate limit exceeded' mean on Tumblr?
Tumblr's Help Center says it means you have tried to access the site too many times in rapid succession, and asks you to give it some time and try again later. It adds that a VPN sharing one IP address across many users can cause the error, and that you can turn the VPN off.
Why is Tumblr two-factor authentication not working?
Tumblr's codes come from an authenticator app, not by email. If you cannot reach the app, a backup code can replace the code and each backup code works once. With neither, contact support using the 'Account access' category.
What should I do if my Tumblr account was hacked?
Tumblr's Help Center says to change your password, turn on two-factor authentication and revoke apps you do not trust. If you have lost the account, contact support with the 'Account access' category and choose 'My account was hacked'.
What should I do if my Tumblr account is terminated?
Tumblr says you may appeal through its Support form up to six months after the moderation decision, and that humans review appeals. For a wrongful termination, the recovery page points to the 'Terminated account' category. Do not reply to the original notification.
